Silent Retreat Weekend

Buddha said, "There is one thing, that when cultivated and regularly practised, leads to deep spiritual intention, to peace, to mindfulness, and clear comprehension, to vision and knowledge, to a happy life here and now, and to the culmination of wisdom and awakening. And what is that one thing? It is mindfulness centred on the body."

In this retreat, we give ourselves the gift of a caring environment to dedicate ourselves to ourselves, to our bodies and hearts. Immersing ourselves in guided meditation, yoga, walking in nature, allows us to cultivate a deep, mindful awareness and to know ourselves better. Then we can take the ease, freedom and joy that comes from this knowing into how we relate to our everyday lives and the people we care for.

This type of retreat is generally held in silence so that you can better stay with your own present experience as it unfolds, moment to moment.

If there is a tone or underlying assumption to this retreat, it is compassion and gentleness and it's expressed in these words from Bob Sharples:

"Don't meditate to fix yourself, to improve yourself, to redeem yourself; rather do it as an act of love, of deep warm friendship to yourself. In this way there is no longer any need for the subtle aggression of self-improvement, for the endless guilt of not doing enough. It offers the possibility of an end to the ceaseless round of trying so hard that wraps so many people's lives up in a knot. Instead there is now meditation as an act of love. How endlessly delightful and encouraging."

 So, we come together for this weekend as an act of love and deep, warm friendship to ourselves.

Sample schedule

The whole retreat is based around practices of mindfulness: movement, yoga, walking, sitting meditation and lying meditation. Depending on the season, we’ll wake around 7am for a 7:15 start, and we'll finish around 9pm with free time built in. Everything is optional and you're more than welcome to spend extra time bushwalking, relaxing around the pool, spending time in the heated outside bath, etc.

  • 7am – Wake up
  • 7:15 – Movement
  • 8am – Deep relaxation
  • 8:20 – Practice
  • 8:50 – Breakfast and free time
  • 10:30 – Instructions and sitting practice
  • 11:15 – Bushwalking as a group
  • 12:15 – Sitting
  • 1pm – Lunch and free time
  • 2:30 – Instructions and sitting practice
  • 3pm – Walking
  • 3:30 – Sitting
  • 4pm – Movement
  • 5pm – Sunset walk to Ridge
  • 6pm – Dinner and free time
  • 7:30 – Talk and practice
  • 8:45 – Closing for the day or moonlight practice

All meals are provided and are mainly vegetarian, centred around fresh fruits and vegetables.

Breakfast

  • Bircher muesli
  • Fresh brad for toast
  • Selection of jams & spreads 
  • Avocado, tomato, lemon, feta
  • Gluten free cereal
  • Make your own fresh juice: carrot, orange, lemon, celery, parsley, apple
  • Selection of teas & coffee 

Lunch

  • Wild rice salad
  • Spicy pumpkin soup + extra herbs, spiced nuts, yoghurts, etc.
  • Date slice

Dinner 

  • Teriyaki tofu bowls
  • Gluten free almond cake + fresh berries
